Flower Hill Fleeces

Flower Hill Farm is situated on 230 rolling acres in Armstrong County Pennsylvania and serves as home for a growing flock of registered Shetland and Icelandic sheep (in addition to 3 dogs, 2 cats and a varying number of free range laying hens). Carefully bred and selected for their quality fleeces, the sheep of Flower Hill Farm are tended to by Jodi Horgan, who owns the farm and is an avid spinner and knitter.

Jodi knows that happy sheep produce the best fleeces and beautiful yarn, and her sheep are cared for with love and attention. Sheltered by a restored Pennsylvania bank barn and with access to well fenced pastures guarded by Bear, a Great Pyrenees/British Mastiff mix, Jodi’s flock produces very fine lambs and fleeces.

Our Home Grown yarn collection is produced using wool from our flock. These are one of kind skeins of yarn curated based on natural colors of the sheep raised on our farm. Our Home Grown yarns are spun by a small family run wool mill located in Western Pennsylvania. Our Hand Dyed yarn collection comes in a variety of bases. We dye in small batches (usually 3-4 skeins at a time) using acid dyes. Each skein is lovingly handled many times as it goes from raw yarn to hand crafted skein.

IKS Volunteers: We need your help!

Hey there, remember me?  I don’t know if you’ve heard yet but IKS is actually happening this year on October 9th at the Nova Place in Pittsburgh, PA.  This show is what it is because of the amazing help of volunteers who ensure our vendors can get loaded and set up in record times. We thank our volunteers with some special swag too, so don’t think your hard work will go unappreciated!

If you are interested and available please fill out the following form:
https://forms.gle/rF1cRMX64vmLzs85A

Also, we know we are in the middle of a pandemic, so please note the following two key bits of COVID info for IKS:

– Masking: If transmission in Allegheny county is “substantial” or above according to the CDC we will require masking for all attendees and vendors.  If IKS were happening today we would require full masking.

– Vaccination: We would like to encourage everyone to go get the vaccine if you have not already done so (even with Moderna you can be fully vaccinated in 6 weeks).  Vaccination is not required, but right now it is the best thing you can do to ensure the safety of everyone in your life.
That being said, the Pittsburgh area is seeing low hospitalization rates and our governor announced today that 80% of the eligible population has had at least one shot.  Our new shallow booth configurations, paired with the large open space of Nova Place will help to ensure good air flow and minimize risk of transmission.

Thanks in advance, and we look forward to seeing you in person.  Be sure to spread this request far and wide cause we are going to need as many volunteers as we can get for our new location.  Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks again for helping in the past.

Indie Knit and Spin Spring 2021

We have postponed the Fall 2020 Marketplace – our next marketplace will take place on Saturday June 5th, 2021 at Nova Place on the North Shore.

Please support our vendors in the meantime by shopping at their websites. We will be sharing our usual vendor profiles in the upcoming days and will publish a full list of vendor websites.

Fall 2020 Applications are now OPEN!

In this uncertain time we hope we can bring a little sunshine by announcing that the applications for the Fall 2020 Indie Knit and Spin are finally open!
This year we have changed locations to the wonderful Nova Place on the North Shore of Pittsburgh (photos below).  The event will take place October 3rd, 2020 and, because we have so much more space, we are hoping to bring in more vendors than ever before.
A couple of key things to note:
– This event will only occur if Allegheny County is in Phase Green according to the State of Pennsylvania due to measures to protect the public from the spread of COVID-19.
– Many of our staples (raffle, give away table, etc) may be impacted by the health crisis, we will be communicating more on those details closer to the show.
– To reduce crowding we are restricting vendors to 6 foot deep booths with widths in increments of 6 feet (making booths 6’x12′, or 6’x18′).  It sounds strange but trust us, it works great.
– In order to become more accessible to up and coming vendors we are now also adding a 6′ table option!  Vendors must, however, supply their own table…
– Because things can change very quickly we will be allowing cancellations with full refunds of booth fees (minus processing fees) up to two weeks prior to the event and half refunds (minus processing fees) all the way up to the day of.
– With our new location we will be able to accept even more vendors!  So if you didn’t make it in for past shows, be sure to apply again.
– In case of mandatory cancellation due to government intervention full refunds (minus processing fees) will be distributed to all vendors.
Just like last time we are asking everyone to apply through the following form:
Applications are open until May 30th and selections will be made by June 7th.
Thank you for your interest and please feel free to let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Nik Duarte, IKS Chair

Good Water & Co.

Good Water and Co. was born out of frustration. As a knitter frequenting public transit on trips into and out of New York City, I struggled to find a bag that would keep my yarn neat, my notions accessible, and my projects safe — while still keeping all of those other real life essentials, like my phone, wallet, and keys, close at hand.

I went through bag after bag, but nothing quite worked.

Finally, I hit my limit. I grabbed some fabric, some batting, and a pair of scissors, determined to make a bag that fit my needs.

What emerged was this: a bag made from 100% quilters grade cotton, quilted and lined with stiff interfacing for stability partnered with a removable insert featuring detachable, freestanding, yarn boxes with a grommet on top to keep things flowing smoothly. An interior pocket held my keys and wallet. Even with everything packed in, I could still find it all — and pack my project in safely.

I had a winner.

Good Water and Co. bags are designed to meet the needs of busy knitters, knitters who sneak in stitches on trains, planes, and automobiles; for knitters who like to keep things neat and tidy, who love the idea of a knitting bag, but hate the mess; for knitters who need a bag as diverse as their craft.

Dusty Tree

Dusty Tree provides soap & hand-dyed yarns inspired by Nature. My soaps are all palm oil free, plant based and handcrafted in small batches using natural colorants and essential oils. I also make a low suds no rinse wool wash perfect for your hand crafted creations. The yarns I offer are all dyed in micro batches using professional grade acid dyes. I like to dye colorways that are more muted and darker in tone and that can be worked together in projects. Lastly, I offer paper copies of a few of my accessory knitting patterns. If you purchase one, I’ll provide you with an access code so you are able to add it to your online Ravelry library. Thank you!
