What is your current favorite color or color combination? We’re all obsessed with teal.

Or if you make something else, your favorite whatever as applies to that.  What are you into right now?  Cheryl is spinning gold, Nora is dyeing as much as possible, Anna is finishing up a wensleydale-to-sweater project, and Becca’s loving the craftivism embroidered affirmations (https://www.instagram.com/p/BKrPU5EA-JL/?taken-by=steelcityfiber)!

Artisan Buttons

Name: Emily Eckel
Business: Artisan Buttons

Artisan Buttons offers a selection of buttons not found in the big box stores.
My buttons are hand crafted from recycled or locally sourced materials.  If you are looking for special buttons to complete your project come see me at Indy Knit and Spin.

I make reclaimed hardwood buttons from old rulers, instrument boxes, furniture, children’s blocks and wood workers’ scraps.  The buttons are made in series and when the source material is exhausted the series is complete.  For this reason all of the wood buttons are limited editions.

My hand dyed recycled buttons are salvaged from button collections of friends, or purchased at thrift shops and estate sales.  These white or light colored buttons are carefully cleaned and sorted.  Then they are dyed in a hot dye process and rinsed obsessively.  They all take the dye a bit differently and no two are exactly the same.  The colors are rich.

I also make buttons using pre industrial revolution techniques such as needle weaving embroidery floss onto rings.  The Dorset cross wheel design is an example of one of these beautiful patterns.  This technique was once a closely guarded secret among the button makers living in a small area in England.  Their way of earning a living ended with the industrial revolution.

Steel City Stitcher

What color or color combo are you into right now? What can’t you get enough of?
I feel drawn to blues and greens when purchasing yarn and fiber but when I’m making bags for the shop I’m much more adventurous with fabric pairings.  I also love when my customers request something special because they always come up with great ideas!

Joanna’s Boutique

Name: Joanna Romaniuk
Business: Joanna’s Boutique
Website: etsy.com/shop/JoannasBoutique

What color or color combination are you currently into? What can’t you get enough of?
My current favorite color is chartreuse, even if I’m using it less than turquoise. I’m into dyeing roving with silk and bamboo mixed in it. It has a brilliance and depth of color. And spins really easy.

One Sly Fox

Name: Sarah Teigler
Business: One Sly Fox
Website: oneslyfox.etsy.com

What is your current favorite thing?
My favorite thing that I make, that’s a tough question. I love my fandom stuff. No particular fandom for myself but I’m just really happy to make it and have such great reactions whenever someone sees it. Brutally honest, I keep one of EVERYTHING fandom for myself.

Fandom stitch markers and tools! Here you see a Tardis threader and a set of Labyrinth stitch markers (or as I like to call them, the David Bowie special). Tardis and Labyrinth stitch markers will return for IKS 2016 AND new kids Maraders and Owl Post will be there too!

markers, in every color and size! From tiny ones perfect for socks to huge ones that move easily making afghans.

Keeper necklaces to keep everything (stitch markers, snips, darning needles) at hand and OFF the floor. Worry dolls who understand your spinning woes, with supported and drop spindles.

Skullies, pink support and hooked stitch markers for crocheters. Those hinged hooks are specially treated so they don’t snag!

Hand spun art yarn. No two are ever the same. Funky batts, odd ball rovings and little bits of “what the heck” make each skein unique. These make some awfully fun hats and mitts.

Gwen Erin Natural Fibers

greenershades

This year I have wanted to bring more supporting tools and goodies to the table. For years I’ve been selling Eucalan and knitting notions, but recently I started carrying Greener Shades dyes. These are free of heavy metals, but still full of pizazz. I have each of the nine colors in 1/2 jars, but also carry a mixing kit for those who want to get started with the basics.

tools

In addition to the dyes, I have just begun to stock a new type of spindle along with niddy-noddies for winding skeins of yarn. These pieces are handcrafted in Cincinnati, OH using maple and beech. I will have beginner kits that include fiber and spindle, but the spindles will be available individually as well.

silkhankies

Along with my combed top, carded batts, curly locks, and other woolly goods, I have added more silk! You will find small bags of silk noil to use on your blending board or drumcarder. I have also been dyeing silk hankies for spinning. And there are new handdyed silk chiffon scarves for you to use in your next nuno felting project.
